Check the lender behind a digital loan app before sharing documents

A loan app’s name is not necessarily the name of the organisation lending the money. For readers in Mumbai, make that identity question explicit before sharing documents. This is a verification exercise, not a recommendation of an app, a credit offer or an assessment of whether you should borrow.

Write down each named organisation

Record the app’s displayed name, the company operating it and the bank or non-banking financial company it says is responsible for lending. Keep those entries separate even when a screen presents them together. Save the date and the exact page where each identity appears. A professional logo, an app-store listing or a familiar-sounding name does not resolve the relationship. Leave missing information blank. You are trying to find a checkable chain of identities, not to award an app a safety label because its presentation looks complete.

Check the claimed relationship independently

Locate the named lender’s official website through a separate route and look for its own information about the app or service relationship. Do not let a link in an unsolicited message be your only route. Indian consumer guidance advises checking the association with a regulated bank or non-banking financial company and avoiding loan apps delivered through unverified message links. A claimed registration or relationship is not the same as RBI approving every app feature or guaranteeing an individual loan. If the identities do not match, pause rather than solving the mismatch with a guess.

Keep document sharing behind the identity check

Before supplying a file, record who will receive it, why it is requested and which verified channel you intend to use. Do not send identity documents or account-access information to an unidentified person while waiting for an explanation. A request for urgency does not answer a question about the lender. Preserve suspicious messages privately and use appropriate verified reporting channels if needed. Even a confirmed identity leaves separate questions about cost, repayment, permissions and personal circumstances. Work through those questions independently; completing this worksheet is not an instruction to continue with the application.

  • Separate the app, operator and lender names.
  • Check the lender’s own current information independently.
  • Do not treat a registration claim as a universal guarantee.
  • Pause document sharing while a material identity remains unresolved.
